Menopause and Pilates
There are so many symptoms of the menopause, and let’s face it it’s not only women
but their partners and family members that have to go through it with them. Therefore, everyone should understand and do what they can to help themselves navigate this tricky road!
If you are considering Pilates to help with your menopausal symptoms, then I
suggest choosing a small class with an experienced or more mature instructor who
really can relate to the problems you are experiencing.
Here are just a few reasons…
Breathing
Breathing is a key element in Pilates paring our breath with our moves. This focus
on our breath helps to connect the body and mind, reduces stress and promotes
greater relaxation and well-being. The focus here is on yourself and with regular
Pilates exercises we can improve lung capacity and have a greater oxygen intake.
Bone Density
As we go into the menopause years decreases and we can get
Osteoporosis. Bone breaks become more common as we age but Pilates weight
bearing and resistance band exercises can help with this such as squats, lunges and
planks. Regular sessions can increase bone density and stimulate bone growth.
Balance & Brain Fog
This can be affected in Menopause due to hormonal changes with
a decline in estrogen which can impact the inner ear. This together with lack of
sleep, greater anxiety, hot flushes can also contribute to balance issues. Pilates can
be highly beneficial for improving balance as it enhances body awareness,
strengthens core muscles and improves co-ordination with controlled movements
and transitions.
Flexibility
Joint mobility and flexibility are often affected by the menopause. We often
experience increased joint stiffness, have joint pain and decreased flexibility. Pilates
incorporates gentle stretching and controlled “whole body” exercises that can
improve flexibility and your range of movement, combat joint stiffness and reduce
pain.
Pilates is a fun, safe and accessible “low impact” form of exercise that can be
modified to suit your individual needs and fitness level. Consider joining a group
near you regularly to really see the benefit. It will certainly help your mood and I’m
sure you will make many like-minded new friends too!
